You were charming, last night, charming but firm as Gay Perry in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, already a Hollywood elder by 2005. Last night, you were alive, and so was that blissful past, tiny cell phones just visible at the story’s fringes.

You were understated next to RDJ, and paternal to Michelle Monaghan. You were the veteran, aging gracefully, happy to cede centre stage.

Val Kilmer. Quietly iconic, in a film about filmmaking, peering back at me from my iPad, still alive in my bedroom.
